Arrested Development Movie A Possibility
Posted on 02.04.08 by David @ 12:29 pm

Arrested DevelopmentApparently, both Jeffrey Tambor and Jason Bateman have let slip that a film version of the sitcom is being discussed. While the show did manage to provide something of a wrap-up and go out at the top of its game in its final season, a film continuation is still a pretty appealling idea. We’ll see where this goes.

KEKEXILI: MOUNTAIN PATROL – Moral quicksand

Kekexili

Kekexili (the title has been reversed in the English version to put the more comprehensible Mountain Patrol first) is the story of a rural Tibetan militia formed to fight poachers and preserve local wildlife. Shooting in cinema verite style, from the perspective of a Chinese journalist reporting on the group, director Chuan Yu creates a grim and ambiguous morality tale that stays well within the grey areas of human nature. The militia, and their fierce leader Ri Tai, are admirable in many ways, and it is easy to respect what they are trying to do. However, it quickly becomes clear that the men are deeply compromised individuals, and that the moral line between them and poachers is not as clear as it first appears.

Showtime Is White Knight For Arrested Development?
Posted on 02.28.06 by David @ 11:58 am

“Hmm, maybe the fat lady should shut her mouth and take a seat. The New York Post hears brand-new buzz that Showtime has not only picked up Fox’s canceled Arrested Development but has ordered a full 26 episodes.”

After an excellent season/series finale whet my appetite for more, I hope this turns out to be true.

Showtime Sweetens Offer For Arrested Development
Posted on 01.18.06 by David @ 8:48 am

Ausiello: The grapevine (and the current issue of Television Week) is telling me that Showtime recently sweetened the negotiations pot by offering to pick up Arrested for two — count ‘em, two — seasons upfront. That’s a lot better than the paltry 13-episode commitment ABC was prepared to make. Meanwhile, at press tour on Tuesday, Fox president Peter Liguori confirmed that it is “highly unlikely” that Arrested will live on at Fox (no, really?), although he said he’s holding off on making a final decision until after the show’s last four episodes air in February. “It is regrettable that we did not find the audience that that show deserved. But it’s a [Twentieth] property, and if there is interest from other networks, it’s the studio’s right to put it up to bid.”

Go Showtime!

Arrested Development Update: Hope Springs Eternal
Posted on 12.14.05 by David @ 8:47 am

Arrested DevelopmentAccording to TVGuide.com, there is still a chance that Arrested Development will be saved:

“INTO THE BLUTHS: Both ABC and Showtime are in talks with 20th Century Fox to rescue Arrested Development from the cold, clammy hooked hand of the grim reaper. According to Variety, formal negotiations have not yet taken place, but sources still label the networks’ interest as “serious,” with Showtime the more fervently interested of the two. ”

Update - Arrested Development To Make Fun Of Its Own Cancellation
Posted on 11.18.05 by David @ 2:00 pm

Looks like the Arrested Development team is at least going to have a chance to say something about the cancellation, instead of simply disappearing. From TVGuide.com, by way of Variety. Thanks to Tammy for drawing this to our attention.

Terrible News For Arrested Development Fans
Posted on 11.15.05 by David @ 8:35 am

Arrested DevelopmentFox, notorious for pulling the plug on such brilliant shows as Undeclared (created by 40 Year Old Virgin’s Judd Apatow), has now done it again. CNN reports that the third season of Arrested Development has been cut to 13 episodes and that Fox will not be ordering any more. This is quite a shame as Arrested Development is one of the funniest shows on the air, and also one of the most cinematic, exercising the freedom of the newly popular single-camera sitcom style to the utmost. The show followed the adventures of a rich, nasty family in the process of being investigated by the government, and their attempts to cope with their new lifestyle. The humor was twisted and brilliant, and frequently much raunchier than one would expect on broadcast television, including, for example, a character claiming to be the world’s first Analyst-Therapist with business cards that say “anal-rapist.” Movie homages were frequent, including a scene where one of the main characters named Buster replicates Buster Keaton’s famous stunt where he survives a falling building facade by standing where the window lands, and most recently a Godzilla-style smackdown between a giant mole and a man in a jetpack.

Arrested DevelopmentTo be fair, Fox did give the show a chance this time. Despite consistently poor ratings, Fox maintained the show into its third season. The show was quite insular - no show since Seinfeld has built so successfully on subtle running jokes and character traits, which added to the fun for regular viewers, but made it a difficult horse to mount midstream. I strongly suggest that those of you haven’t seen it yet at least seek it out on DVD, where the linear plot can best be appreciated. The first two seasons are available already, and replay value is high - many of the jokes only come out on a second viewing.

Oh well, it was one of those things that was just too good to last. Tim Goodman of the SF Chronicle suggests that Showtime might get into the act, and pick it up. That would be a smart move for a network that perennially fields also-rans against HBO, and great for the show, which already borders on pay-cable levels of adult humor. Here’s hoping.
