Trailer Now Available for Gordon Liu’s Bollywood Debut
Posted on 12.13.08 by Jeff @ 6:54 pm

ChandniAbout a month ago, Cinema Strikes Back reported on Gordon Liu’s upcoming appearance in the Bollywood film Chandni Chowk to China. Now, Grady Hendrix at the Kaiju Shakedown blog has uncovered the trailer for this film. This looks like tons of fun; we can’t wait to see it.

N.B. This is not the first time a kung fu star has appeared in a Bollywood film. According to the good folks at Teleport City, that honor belongs to Bruce Le, of all people.

Bollywood News Round-Up - Gordon Liu in Bollywood; RGV’s Latest Horror; Robot Superstar
Posted on 11.19.08 by David @ 10:01 am

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema (including Kollywood, Tollywood, and all the -Ollywoods you can shake a stick at).

GORDON LIU IN BOLLYWOOD

ChandniGordon Liu, beloved of kung fu fans for his series of outstanding films with Liu Chia-lung in the seventies and eighties, is continuing to ride the late period revival led by his double-casting in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. Now Liu is making the leap to Bollywood, with an appearance in Nikhil Advani’s Chandni Chowk to China, slated to hit screens in 2009. Advani is a talented director, producing superior quality commercial pictures like Kal Ho Naa Ho, which we at CSB are only a little ashamed to admit that we enjoyed quite a bit, so Chandni Chowk has some real potential. The film also is being produced in conjunction with Warner Brothers, so there may be a decent budget.

Bollywood News Round-Up - New Bollygeneration; Multiplexes and Digital Projection; Sanjay free
Posted on 11.29.07 by David @ 2:14 pm

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema.

New Bollygeneration

Amitabh and AbhishekThe new Bolly-generation is here. The children and grandchildren of some of Bollywood’s top actors and families are getting ready to make their screen debuts in attempt to maintain legacies. Among them are Mimoh Chakraborty, son of entertaining 80’s cheese actor Mithun Chakraborty (star of Disco Dancer and Dance, Dance, also see our review of Commando), who will appear in “Jimmy,” named after his father’s Disco Dancer character. Also in her first film is Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor of the great Mr. India and Parinda. It remains to be seen if they have the talent to back up the genes, though sometimes it can take a while to tell. After all, Amitabh Bachchan’s son Abhishek seemed like a bust until his image-shattering turn in Mani Ratnam’s Yuva.

Bollywood News Round-Up - Salman as Tarzan?; Other Ollywoods; Oscar Kerfluffle
Posted on 10.25.07 by David @ 10:23 am

Salman is Tarzan?

SalmanSalman Khan, convicted and sentenced to jail for poaching rare animals, supposedly has been signed on to play Tarzan, friend to animals, in an upcoming film. Talk about the ultimate in image rehabilitation. Perhaps Salman, as Tarzan, can fight celebrity poachers.

For my money, there will only ever be one great Bollywood Tarzan film anyway, and that’s B. Subbhash’s Tarzan. Bappi Lahiri’s score can’t be beat, fake animals are tossed about with abandon, and the film is about as sleazy as mainstream Bollywood gets (including a shocking wet t-shirt scene that I can’t believe made it past the censors).

Bollywood News Round-Up - India’s Greatest Film Villains; Sony and Eros Team Up; Oscar Lawsuit
Posted on 10.02.07 by David @ 11:04 am

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema.

Amrish Puri as MogamboRediff has polled its readers on the greatest film villains in India cinema and the results are in. The great Amrish Puri tops the list as Mogambo in Mr. India. Mogambo Khush hua! Amjad Khan naturally also made the list as Gabbar Singh in Sholay. I can’t argue with most of the selections but I would like to point out the exclusion of Ajay Agarwal as Saamri in Purana Mandir is unwarranted. The Ramsay Brothers get no respect!

::: Bollywood’s greatest villains

The biggest news on the block is that Sony and Eros (one of the major Indian film distributors) have teamed up to develop and produce Hindi films. Six to eight films are expected in the first year of the agreement. As for the territorial carve-up, the two will share India, Sony will get North America, and Eros will get the rest of the world. The films will be a mix - some aimed only at Indian audiences on the subcontinent and abroad, and some shooting for a wider release.

Bollywood News Round-Up - Kamal Hassan’s Biggest Fans; Big B to Try English Language Film
Posted on 09.14.07 by David @ 11:36 am

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema.

Kamal T-shirtsWe at Cinema Strikes Back are big fans of Kamal Hassan, star of excellent Tamil films like Aalavandhan [aka Abhay], Sigappu Rojakkal, and Guna. However, a new fan club has taken things a little further. In order to increase Hassan’s already-impressive popularity, the group is distributing free Kamal Hassan t-shirts to poorer fans. So any Kamal fans out there who can’t afford t-shirts - now is your chance. It’s a freaky T too - I didn’t know that Kamal could do the Lo Lieh/Five Fingers of Death shtick (see here).

Bollywood News Round-Up - Remakes in the News; Salman Khan Goes Directly to Jail
Posted on 08.30.07 by David @ 4:21 pm

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema.

My Cousin Desi?It appears the numerous lawsuits and bad press are finally affecting remake-happy producers in India. Ravi Chopra has bucked the usual trend by actually seeking to acquire the remake rights to My Cousin Vinny, instead of just knocking it off in the style of Kaante (a mishmash of Reservoir Dogs, Usual Suspects, and Heat) or Zinda (Old Boy). I honestly can’t decide if this make me happy or not - to some extent it was the complete willingness to throw copyright to the wind that made film industries like that of Turkey and Hong Kong so much fun back in the day. With strict copyright protection, you’d never get mindbogglers like vampires kicking the heads off people to the tune of the James Bond theme in Kung Fu Zombie.

Aishwarya Rai to Co-Star in Pink Panther Sequel
Posted on 08.10.07 by David @ 2:20 pm

Aishwarya Rai

No offense to any fans of the Steve Martin-Pink Panther remakes (should any such persons exist), but this is not how I’d hoped Ash would break into Hollywood. It is a good opportunity for a gratuitous shot of the beautiful Ms. Rai though.

Bollywood News Round-Up - Sanjay Dutt Goes to Jail; Animation in Bollywood; Lunch with Sridevi

Sanjay - courtesy of AP Photo

The big news this week is the sentencing of star Sanjay Dutt to six years in prison for his illegal possession of weapons connected with terrorist bombings in 1993. I can’t say I’m a Dutt fan who will take this personally (I don’t watch the Pak-bashing action films, and recent films like Musafir and Kaante were pretty weak) , but that is some serious time. Dutt is already appealling - we’ll see where that goes.

Bollywood News Round-Up - Sholay Remake Hits Licensing Troubles; Bipasha Basu Linked to Ronaldo; Amitabh Interview
Posted on 07.12.07 by David @ 3:57 pm

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema.

Amitabh

Ram Gopal Varma’s remake of Sholay (the most popular Indian film ever, and a hell of a lot of fun) has hit a bit of snag. Due to rights issues, the film is now to be called Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag instead of Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay, and the characters may be getting makeovers as well. Wouldn’t be the first time a convenient name change avoided some serious copyright issues.

Bollywood News Round-Up
Posted on 06.27.07 by David @ 10:57 am

We’re debuting a new feature this week - “Bollywood News Round-up” - which will gather the interesting stories from Indian cinema every few weeks and condense them for your reading pleasure. Rest assured, we will be covering more than just Bollywood, Tamil films in particular being near and dear to our hearts.

Director Ashvin Kumar is preparing a thriller set in a tiger sanctuary in order to draw attention to the horrendous poaching that is wiping out India’s natural fauna. The film, to be called The Forest, features a couple trapped in the woods with a leopard maimed by poachers. Maybe Bolly-star Salman Khan, sentenced to jail for poaching gazelles, will have a chance to watch this one in prison.

::: Indian thriller to prick conscience on poaching

Sivaji

Superstar Rajni’s new film Sivaji: The Boss is tearing up the charts and heading towards genuine blockbuster status - always good news for the Tamil film industry. At the same time, Rajni fans are tearing up theaters - Malaysian fans rioted when prints of Sivaji failed to show up, and destroyed two theaters.

Vishal Bharadwaj collaborates with Pan’s Labyrinth cinematographer
Posted on 03.28.07 by Jeff @ 7:47 am

Vishal Bharadwaj, the brilliant director of Maqbool and Omkara (see CSB review here), is directing a short film featuring the cinematography of Guillermo Navarro, who won an academy award for his outstanding work on Pan’s Labyrinth.

Pan's Labyrinth

We are greatly looking forward to this collaboration between two world-class filmmakers, and hope that it will lead to more international recognition for both of their bodies of work. Rediff has an excellent interview with both of these gentlemen that can be found here.

Black Friday Opens Today Worldwide
Posted on 02.09.07 by Jeff @ 11:17 am

Anurag Kashyap — who wrote the screenplay of Ram Gopal Varma’s gangster masterpiece Satya and worked on the dialogue of the Oscar-nominated Water — is one of India’s most promising filmmakers. Black Friday is his first directorial effort to receive a commercial release, and has already received rave reviews from the Hollywood Reporter and the New York Times. The film is a Battle of Algiers-style account of the bomb blasts that rocked Bombay in 1993. The film’s release was held up for many months by the Indian courts, and it is a minor miracle that it is now being released to theaters around the world. We can’t wait to see it. In New York City, Black Friday is playing at the multiplex in Union Square; check out showtimes here.

Sholay (1975) - Movie Image
Posted on 09.01.06 by Jeff @ 8:33 pm

Sholay (IMDb profile) is the most popular Bollywood movie of all time, and it is playing at Lincoln Center from now until September 5. For those who have not seen it, Sholay is a rousing, epic action film that largely resembles a Spaghetti Western. Originally released in 1975, it was so popular in the pre-home video era that a bestselling record was released featuring nothing but the film’s dialogue! (Audiences particularly relish the lines of the film’s belovedly nasty bad guy, Gabbar Singh.) Sholay has retained its fervent cult following; aside from a few regrettable moments of comic relief, the film holds up very well for the contemporary first-time viewer. We do not know if Lincoln Center is showing the director’s cut (featuring a shockingly violent but oh-so-satisfying climax that was originally censored), but hopefully they are.

Anuradha Sengupta’s In-Depth Interview Of Ram Gopal Varma
Posted on 08.15.06 by Jeff @ 12:04 pm

Ram Gopal VarmaRam Gopal Varma (see our profile here) has been directing and producing some of the most hard-hitting and beautifully-crafted gangster films anywhere in the world for years. In this frank interview, Anuradha Sengupta talks with Varma about the challenges of producing films, his love for Mumbai/Bombay, his interest in gangster films, and acknowledges that Bhoot is a remake of Raat (a point which some few have debated).
