N.B. This is not the first time a kung fu star has appeared in a Bollywood film. According to the good folks at Teleport City, that honor belongs to Bruce Le, of all people. Salman is Tarzan?
For my money, there will only ever be one great Bollywood Tarzan film anyway, and that’s B. Subbhash’s Tarzan. Bappi Lahiri’s score can’t be beat, fake animals are tossed about with abandon, and the film is about as sleazy as mainstream Bollywood gets (including a shocking wet t-shirt scene that I can’t believe made it past the censors). ::: Bollywood’s greatest villains The biggest news on the block is that Sony and Eros (one of the major Indian film distributors) have teamed up to develop and produce Hindi films. Six to eight films are expected in the first year of the agreement. As for the territorial carve-up, the two will share India, Sony will get North America, and Eros will get the rest of the world. The films will be a mix - some aimed only at Indian audiences on the subcontinent and abroad, and some shooting for a wider release. ![]() No offense to any fans of the Steve Martin-Pink Panther remakes (should any such persons exist), but this is not how I’d hoped Ash would break into Hollywood. Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema. ![]() The big news this week is the sentencing of star Sanjay Dutt to six years in prison for his illegal possession of weapons connected with terrorist bombings in 1993. I can’t say I’m a Dutt fan who will take this personally (I don’t watch the Pak-bashing action films, and recent films like Musafir and Kaante were pretty weak) , but that is some serious time. Dutt is already appealling - we’ll see where that goes. ::: Indian Actor Dutt Sentenced to 6 Years Filed under: Movie News and Movie News: Bollywood and Movie News: India and Bollywood News Round-up and People: Sridevi Comments: 1 Comment |

Our semi-regular round-up of what is new in Indian cinema. ![]() Ram Gopal Varma’s remake of Sholay (the most popular Indian film ever, and a hell of a lot of fun) has hit a bit of snag. Due to rights issues, the film is now to be called Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag instead of Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay, and the characters may be getting makeovers as well. Wouldn’t be the first time a convenient name change avoided some serious copyright issues. We’re debuting a new feature this week - “Bollywood News Round-up” - which will gather the interesting stories from Indian cinema every few weeks and condense them for your reading pleasure. Rest assured, we will be covering more than just Bollywood, Tamil films in particular being near and dear to our hearts. Director Ashvin Kumar is preparing a thriller set in a tiger sanctuary in order to draw attention to the horrendous poaching that is wiping out India’s natural fauna. The film, to be called The Forest, features a couple trapped in the woods with a leopard maimed by poachers. Maybe Bolly-star Salman Khan, sentenced to jail for poaching gazelles, will have a chance to watch this one in prison. ::: Indian thriller to prick conscience on poaching ![]() Superstar Rajni’s new film Sivaji: The Boss is tearing up the charts and heading towards genuine blockbuster status - always good news for the Tamil film industry. At the same time, Rajni fans are tearing up theaters - Malaysian fans rioted when prints of Sivaji failed to show up, and destroyed two theaters. Vishal Bharadwaj, the brilliant director of Maqbool and Omkara (see CSB review here), is directing a short film featuring the cinematography of Guillermo Navarro, who won an academy award for his outstanding work on Pan’s Labyrinth. ![]() We are greatly looking forward to this collaboration between two world-class filmmakers, and hope that it will lead to more international recognition for both of their bodies of work. Rediff has an excellent interview with both of these gentlemen that can be found here. ![]() Anurag Kashyap — who wrote the screenplay of Ram Gopal Varma’s gangster masterpiece Satya and worked on the dialogue of the Oscar-nominated Water — is one of India’s most promising filmmakers. Black Friday is his first directorial effort to receive a commercial release, and has already received rave reviews from the Hollywood Reporter and the New York Times. The film is a Battle of Algiers-style account of the bomb blasts that rocked Bombay in 1993. The film’s release was held up for many months by the Indian courts, and it is a minor miracle that it is now being released to theaters around the world. We can’t wait to see it. In New York City, Black Friday is playing at the multiplex in Union Square; check out showtimes here. Sholay (IMDb profile) is the most popular Bollywood movie of all time, and it is playing at Lincoln Center from now until September 5. For those who have not seen it, Sholay is a rousing, epic action film that largely resembles a Spaghetti Western. Originally released in 1975, it was so popular in the pre-home video era that a bestselling record was released featuring nothing but the film’s dialogue! (Audiences particularly relish the lines of the film’s belovedly nasty bad guy, Gabbar Singh.) Sholay has retained its fervent cult following; aside from a few regrettable moments of comic relief, the film holds up very well for the contemporary first-time viewer. We do not know if Lincoln Center is showing the director’s cut (featuring a shockingly violent but oh-so-satisfying climax that was originally censored), but hopefully they are. About a month ago, Cinema Strikes Back
The new Bolly-generation is here. The children and grandchildren of some of Bollywood’s top actors and families are getting ready to make their screen debuts in attempt to maintain legacies. Among them are Mimoh Chakraborty, son of entertaining 80’s cheese actor Mithun Chakraborty (star of Disco Dancer and Dance, Dance, also see our review of
Salman Khan, convicted and sentenced to jail for poaching rare animals, supposedly has been signed on to play Tarzan, friend to animals, in an upcoming film. Talk about the ultimate in image rehabilitation. Perhaps Salman, as Tarzan, can fight celebrity poachers.
Rediff has polled its readers on the greatest film villains in India cinema and the results are in. The great Amrish Puri tops the list as Mogambo in Mr. India. Mogambo Khush hua! Amjad Khan naturally also made the list as Gabbar Singh in Sholay. I can’t argue with most of the selections but I would like to point out the exclusion of Ajay Agarwal as Saamri in
We at Cinema Strikes Back are big fans of Kamal Hassan, star of excellent Tamil films like Aalavandhan [aka Abhay], Sigappu Rojakkal, and Guna. However, a new fan club has taken things a little further. In order to increase Hassan’s already-impressive popularity, the group is distributing free Kamal Hassan t-shirts to poorer fans. So any Kamal fans out there who can’t afford t-shirts - now is your chance. It’s a freaky T too - I didn’t know that Kamal could do the Lo Lieh/Five Fingers of Death shtick (see
It appears the numerous lawsuits and bad press are finally affecting remake-happy producers in India. Ravi Chopra has bucked the usual trend by actually seeking to acquire the remake rights to My Cousin Vinny, instead of just knocking it off in the style of Kaante (a mishmash of Reservoir Dogs, Usual Suspects, and Heat) or Zinda (Old Boy). I honestly can’t decide if this make me happy or not - to some extent it was the complete willingness to throw copyright to the wind that made film industries like that of Turkey and Hong Kong so much fun back in the day. With strict copyright protection, you’d never get mindbogglers like vampires kicking the heads off people to the tune of the James Bond theme in Kung Fu Zombie.
