![]() ![]() With his biting black humor, minimalist storytelling, and character-driven tales about slackers, director Nobuhiro Yamashita has been a recent Cinema Strikes Back favorite (previous coverage here). At the recent AFI Dallas Film Festival, correspondent Blake Ethridge had the chance to catch up with him and discuss “Linda Linda Linda“, his upcoming film “The Matsugane Potshot Affair“, his segment in “Ten Dreamy Nights“, as well as to see if he had finally been able to see Richard Linklater’s “Slacker” (a film to which people have always drawn thematic comparisons). “Linda Linda Linda” incidentally is now out on US Region 1 DVD courtesy of Viz Media (www.viz-pictures.com). ![]() Linda Linda Linda is opening for one week only at The Imaginasian theater (see more here) in New York City. Anyone who was unable to catch this film at the NYAFF should grab the opportunity now. I saw it five months ago, and the song is still stuck in my head. You won’t have a much better time at the movies this year. Thanks to Dr. Criddle in our Movie Lounge for drawing this to our attention. Click below for my capsule review of the film from the NYAFF. Always, a nostalgia-tinged flashback to post-war Japan, won the Audience Award at the 2006 New York Asian Film Festival. Runners-up were the bittersweet Korean War fantasy Welcome to Dongmakgol (see capsule review here) and Japanese headscratcher Funky Forest: The First Contact (see full review here). The previous year’s winner was the excellent The Taste of Tea (see full review here). ![]() Filed under: Movie News and Film Festivals: New York Asian Film Festival 2006 and People: Nobuhiro Yamashita and Movies: Linda Linda Linda (2005) Comments: None |

The fifth annual Subway Cinema New York Asian Film Festival continues. Here’s a rundown of some of the films that played during the second week of the festival (some of which still have additional showings, check the schedule here.) There’s still lots of good stuff in the last week, including a final showing of Linda Linda Linda, so get out there! Oh! My Zombie Mermaid [aka Ah! Ikkenya puroresu] ![]() Forget the zombie, forget the mermaid, what this movie has is a full-blown, knock-down drag out battle to the finish that’ll knock your socks off. See the full review here. Recommended. Funky Forest: The First Contact [aka Naisu no mori: The First Contact] ![]() Last year, Katsuhito Ishii directed A Taste of Tea, which was a sweet and funny look at an eccentric family. This year, he decided to let it all hang out, and the result was Funky Forest, a completely bizarre mélange of sketch comedy, non-sequitur humor, and cheerfully obscene special effects. And dancing, lots of dancing. I absolutely loved it, and so did the crowd at the Festival. Many of you will too, and you probably know who you are. With Tadanobu Asano as “Guitar Brother.” Highly recommended.
