Sholay (1975) - Movie Image
Posted on 09.01.06 by Jeff @ 8:33 pm

Sholay (IMDb profile) is the most popular Bollywood movie of all time, and it is playing at Lincoln Center from now until September 5. For those who have not seen it, Sholay is a rousing, epic action film that largely resembles a Spaghetti Western. Originally released in 1975, it was so popular in the pre-home video era that a bestselling record was released featuring nothing but the film’s dialogue! (Audiences particularly relish the lines of the film’s belovedly nasty bad guy, Gabbar Singh.) Sholay has retained its fervent cult following; aside from a few regrettable moments of comic relief, the film holds up very well for the contemporary first-time viewer. We do not know if Lincoln Center is showing the director’s cut (featuring a shockingly violent but oh-so-satisfying climax that was originally censored), but hopefully they are.

The above production still features Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Ranjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan.

  1. Sholay is the first Indian film I ever saw, and one of the best ways you can introduce yourself to Bollywood cinema. Action, romance, revenge, singing - Sholay’s got it all in spades. Check it out and see what you’ve been missing.

  2. One minor error, folks. The line-up in that production still is Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Ramesh Sippy, and Amjad Khan.
The right people are listed above..just in the wrong order.
But, the important thing is that the Lincoln Center is showing this outright classic!!!
And..thanks for the great image (which I will be turning into my desktop wallpaper immediately!).

  3. Actually thats not Ramesh Sippy. Thats Sanjeev Kumar, one of the best actors ever in Bollywood. He might be unrecognisable cause thats him without make up but in the Movie he plays the Armless Thakur.

  4. Thanks for the tip, Amit! Kumar does indeed look almost completely different in the film as the Thakur, a testament to some excellent acting and makeup.

  5. Thanks for correcting my correction, Amit! Wow!
I never would have recognized him.

  6. Sholay is one great movie where still you would love to go and watch it again and again. The acting and direction, et al. One of the best action sequence which I loved is, where the dacoits on horsebacks, try to get on a moving goods train in which Amitabh, Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar are travelling and they try to shoot the dacoits. A classic scene. This is one helluva movie which has been embedded in my mind till I die!! A cult movie that is.

  8. Hi Venkat
I know one thing for certain. The first shot taken for this movie was the one where Jai (Amitabh) meets the widowed Radha (Jaya Bhaduri) after the aborted night-time safe robbery, hands over the safe keys to her and tells ‘whatever happened last night will not happen again’. This was the very first scene shot on film and was shot some day in October, 1973.
