“‘We have thoroughly enjoyed working together for the past seven months and have reached an amicable decision to part ways on ‘Master of the Crimson Armor,’ ‘ Harvey Weinstein said of the decision. ‘That said, we have tremendous respect for Chen Kaige, (Moonstone proxy) Etchie Stroh and (China Film Corp. managing director) Han Sanping and are all rooting for them as they go forward releasing this film.’” The “Master of the Crimson Armor” title has been scrapped, but Stroh indicated that the shorter, 97 minute version of The Promise would still be the one shown in North America, despite the longer version having been submitted to the Oscars. One hopes that Moonstone will reconsider and show the full version, or at least make that version available on the eventual DVD release, instead of perpetuating the bastardized version. ::: Inside Move: ‘Promise’ not binding for distrib, producers Filed under: Movie News and Movie News: Hong Kong and Movie News: USA and Movies: The Promise ( 极) (2005) and People: Chen Kaige and Studios: Weinstein Co. Finally saw The Promise. I had low expectations, but it still managed to be surprisingly bad. The CGI was of video game quality, and the plot was very dumb. Hiroyuki Sanada was amusing, but Cecilia Cheung was completely wasted. Overall, it was a huge waste of time. Tsui Hark’s Seven Swords was a misfire also, but at least it had something of value. With The Promise, I can’t even say “It was bad, but it had its moments,” because it really didn’t.
